Description:
Globular or not very globate shape with a more or less extensive depression in the base, which in cross-section gives it kidney-shaped appearance, with black rind, large warts, pointed or flat at the summit without crosswise veins. The flesh is grey-brown marked by while undulating veins. The spores are alveolar. It does not usually grow larger than a hens’ egg. It is not very common but can be found under oaks, birches, hazels and beeches. It is found only in Europe. The major area of production in Italy is Irpinia. It tar-like odour means that it is not prized even though it is sometimes eaten after cooking.
